Metadata Taxonomies for News
The IPTC creates and maintains sets of concepts - called a controlled vocabulary or a taxonomy - to be assigned as metadata values to news objects like text, photographs, graphics, audio- and video files and streams. This allows for a consistent coding of news metadata across news providers and over the course of time - that's the reason why we call them IPTC NewsCodes.
- Descriptive NewsCodes to categorize news content, including Media Topics, Subject Codes, Genres, Scene Codes, and World Regions.

A controlled vocabulary
... or taxonomy or scheme is a set of terms to express a facet of news content. Facets could be e.g. the subject, the genre, the urgency etc. A controlled vocabulary could be a flat list of terms or a hierarchical structure. In the context of the G2-Standards a vocabulary is called a 'scheme'.
