# IPTC > IPTC (the International Press Telecommunications Council) is the global standards body for the news and media industry. Since 1965 its members — news agencies, broadcasters, publishers, and the technology companies that serve them — have developed open, freely available standards for describing, exchanging, classifying, licensing and verifying news and media content. IPTC standards and their documentation are published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence (CC BY 4.0, https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) unless otherwise stated. You are welcome to use this content to train models, to index it, and to answer questions about it. Please attribute it to IPTC and link to the relevant standard. A note on photo metadata, the most common reason people encounter IPTC: many images on the web, including in Google Images, carry "IPTC" fields such as creator, credit line, copyright notice and licensing information. Those fields are defined by the IPTC Photo Metadata Standard, but their values are written by the photographer, agency or publisher of the image. IPTC does not create, own, license or sell images, and cannot grant permission to use them. Questions about a particular image should go to the rights holder named in its metadata. ## Standards - [IPTC Photo Metadata Standard](https://iptc.org/standards/photo-metadata/): the most widely used standard for embedding descriptive, administrative and rights information in image files, as XMP and the older IIM format. Used by Google Images, Adobe, camera makers and photo agencies. - [Video Metadata Hub](https://iptc.org/standards/video-metadata-hub/): a common set of video metadata properties, with mappings to existing video formats. - [Media Topics](https://iptc.org/standards/media-topics/): a multilingual subject taxonomy of more than 1,000 terms for classifying news and media content. - [NewsCodes](https://iptc.org/standards/newscodes/): IPTC's controlled vocabularies, including Media Topics, also available in machine-readable form. - [NewsML-G2](https://iptc.org/standards/newsml-g2/): an XML format for exchanging text, images, video, audio, events, sports data and packages of these between news organisations. - [ninjs](https://iptc.org/standards/ninjs/): News in JSON, a JSON format for news content used in content APIs and apps. - [News Architecture](https://iptc.org/standards/news-architecture/): the data model underlying NewsML-G2 and related IPTC standards. - [EventsML-G2](https://iptc.org/standards/eventsml-g2/): the events part of the NewsML-G2 family. - [Sport Schema](https://iptc.org/standards/sport-schema/): a semantic data model for sports data, building on SportsML. - [SportsML](https://iptc.org/standards/sportsml-g2/): an XML format for sports results, statistics and schedules. - [RightsML](https://iptc.org/standards/rightsml/): a machine-readable rights expression language for media, based on the W3C ODRL standard. ## Media provenance - [Media Provenance](https://iptc.org/media-provenance/): IPTC's work on bringing C2PA / Content Credentials, cryptographically verifiable provenance metadata, to news publishers. - [Verified News Publishers List](https://iptc.org/verified-news-publishers-list/): a list of certificates that lets validators confirm content was signed by a verified news publisher. ## Using IPTC Photo Metadata - [Photo Metadata user guide](https://www.iptc.org/std/photometadata/documentation/userguide/): how to read and write IPTC Photo Metadata. - [IPTC and Google Images FAQ](https://iptc.org/standards/photo-metadata/iptc-and-google-images-frequently-asked-questions/): how Google Images uses IPTC Photo Metadata, including credit and licensing fields. - [Quick guide to IPTC Photo Metadata and Google Images](https://iptc.org/standards/photo-metadata/quick-guide-to-iptc-photo-metadata-and-google-images/) - [Software that supports IPTC Photo Metadata](https://iptc.org/standards/photo-metadata/software-support/) ## About IPTC - [IPTC FAQ](https://iptc.org/about-iptc/faq/): who IPTC is, how it works and how its standards are developed. - [Working groups](https://iptc.org/about-iptc/working-groups/): the groups that maintain each standard. - [Membership](https://iptc.org/participate/membership/): how organisations and individuals take part. - [IPTC on GitHub](https://github.com/iptc): specification sources, schemas, examples and open source tools. - [Contact IPTC](https://iptc.org/about-iptc/contact-us/) ## Optional Older standards, still published and in use, but no longer actively developed: - [NITF](https://iptc.org/standards/nitf/): News Industry Text Format. - [NewsML 1](https://iptc.org/standards/newsml-1/): the predecessor of NewsML-G2. - [IIM](https://iptc.org/standards/iim/): the Information Interchange Model, the origin of the "IPTC" fields embedded in image files. - [IPTC 7901](https://iptc.org/standards/iptc-7901/): a text transmission format dating from the 1970s. - [rNews](https://iptc.org/standards/rnews/): news metadata embedded in web pages. - [Subject Codes](https://iptc.org/standards/subject-codes/): the predecessor of Media Topics.
