The IPTC maintains a public discussion group to move the standard forward, and to keep users and maintainers of the standard in touch with one another.

The NITF Users Forum is used to recommend and discuss changes to the NITF standard. It also connects publishers who use NITF and vendors who create tools that process NITF documents.

Version 3.5 was released in December 2009.

Now additional to the DTD an XML Schema is available. Minor adjustments were made to the specifications, all changes are backward compatible.
