For IPTC G2-Standards the IPTC makes a distinction between two types of releases:

• public release = full release of specification documents and an implementation guide. The goal is to have such a release each 12 months in about October of each year
• developer release = only XML Schema files and their documentation, no full specification document and no implementation guide. But the specification is fully valid and approved by the IPTC membership.

Note: the "Standards update" table on the home page and the "Standards Line-up" in the sidebar to the right lists only public releases.

For all other news exchange format standards all releases are "public".

Some material provided on this page is earmarked as to be "under development" - hence not intended for implementation in a production environment. On the other hand the IPTC encourages all developers and software vendors reviewing any upcoming IPTC technology and sending comments.

All members of the family of G2-Standards - you can identify them by their "-G2" in the name - make use of a common framework: the G2 News Architecture (NAR). The NAR has no special specification documents or an implementation guide as the G2-Standard are built on it and the specification of EventsML-G2 and NewsML-G2 incorporate all adopted NAR specifications. Below you will find only references to XML Schema files which are reused by G2-Standards.

Currently NewsML-G2 is implemented by a couple of parties. As some issues are raised in this process and as the NewsML-G2 developer team at the IPTC tries to address them quickly currently minor updates to the standard are released quite frequently - but without changing the design and the basic components.

The IPTC has decided to make available a Public Release of the NewsML-G2 standard and all corresponding documents only once a year, in about October.
Interim versions of NewsML-G2 will be made available as Developer Release versions, it will include only XML Schema files (with comments!), no updated full specification document or Implementation Guideline. These updated document come only with the annual Public Release.

Currently an improvement of the editorial planning features are under discussion.
